The story is set during The Second World War. Chas McGill is a pupil at Garmouth High School in the North East of England.  Like many boys he was an eager collector of war souvenirs.   A German bomber crashes in the woods.  Chas finds it and with the help of his friend removes its machine-gun and ammunition.  The story deals with the complications, the trials and traumas, which result from this discovery.
