Teaching materials in support of the play. Japanese troops have invaded Malaya. A British patrol is in the jungle trying to assess the strength of the Japanese invasion. They rest for a while in a deserted hut. Their radio has a flat battery and they are having trouble getting in touch with their base camp. A Japanese soldier stumbles on the hut. They capture him and soon realise that the Japanese army is marching south in strength. The characters of the members of the patrol are sharply defined and allow us to see the moral dilemmas soldiers sometimes have to face from many different points of view. Willis Hall's The Long and the Short and the Tall is a rich and thought-provoking play. This resource pack contains detailed notes and commentaries and a wide range of worksheets making the text accessible for pupils of differing abilities. Black and white illustrations. This material may be photocopied within the purchasing establishment. Pack price: £21 |
