This novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, was written in 1960 but recalls events in a small town in Alabama in the mid-1930s.  The core of the novel concerns the trial of a black man, Tom Robinson, who has been wrongfully accused of raping a white girl, Mayella Ewell.

This magnificent but demanding novel entertains, saddens, delights and terrifies.   It is a richly rewarding reading experience.
