The central character is a sixteen year old girl who lives in a valley which has escaped the consequences of the nuclear attack. She is joined by John Loomis, a young scientist, who has managed to find his way into the valley. Different attitudes to survival are explored through these two characters. Summaries, vocabulary lists, commentaries and questions are provided for every chapter.
